This morning at 1:15. the County Board of Supervisors passed an ordinance establishing a domestic partner registry and mandating that the hundreds of companies that contract with shall provide the same benefits, or a cash equivalent payout, to registered domestic partners that are provided to married couples. This law is effective /08. The originating sponsors were the current out Supervisors, Richmond and Erickson, and the married, straight Chair of the Board, McDonnell. The vote was stongly in suppport: 25 Ayes/9 Noes/2 Absences Wagner and I, who were the first out Supervisors both testified. (The first out lesbian Congresswoman, Baldwin, began her elected carrier on the Board a few years later.)We addressed the appropriateness of County adding this step for our equal rights to -'s history of being one of the first, often the true first, in the nation on anti-discrimination and employee benefits. And, as if it were a reunion for old timer Supervisors, the now elderly, right-wing, who was the bane of my elected years, showed up to testify against the County-wide registry. It felt so good to him slump out in defeat. Now if we can only overturn the same-sex marriage ban slammed into the WI constitution two years ago.
